What is trigger point
needling (dry needling)?
Trigger point needling — commonly referred to as dry needling — involves the insertion of fine acupuncture needles directly into hyperirritable spots within muscle tissue known as trigger points. These are tight, knotted areas within a muscle that cause localised pain and refer pain to other areas of the body.
Unlike traditional acupuncture which works along meridian pathways, dry needling targets specific dysfunctional muscle tissue directly. The needle penetrates the trigger point, causing the muscle to twitch and release — breaking the cycle of pain, tension and restricted movement.
Dr. Truth Robinson trained extensively in trigger point needling under osteopath David Legg — one of Australia’s most respected practitioners of this technique — developing a level of precision and clinical understanding that sets his approach apart.
What trigger point needling treats
Dry needling is highly effective for musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction across the entire body.
Neck & Shoulder Pain
Trigger points in the upper trapezius, levator scapulae and rotator cuff muscles are a leading cause of chronic neck and shoulder pain — often referring pain to the head, arm and upper back.
→ Learn moreBack Pain & Sciatica
Trigger points in the lumbar, gluteal and piriformis muscles are frequently involved in lower back pain and sciatica — dry needling directly releases the muscular component driving these conditions.

Many chronic headaches originate from trigger points in the neck, suboccipital and jaw muscles. Dry needling these areas provides rapid, lasting relief for cervicogenic and tension-type headaches.

Trigger points in the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles drive jaw pain, clenching, teeth grinding and TMJ dysfunction — responding exceptionally well to precise dry needling.
→ Learn moreSports Injuries
Dry needling accelerates recovery from muscle strains, overuse injuries and sports-related muscle dysfunction — restoring normal muscle function and reducing recovery time.

Trigger points are a major driver of chronic muscle and joint pain across the body — from hips and knees to wrists and ankles. Dry needling releases the muscular dysfunction keeping pain cycles active long after the original injury has healed.

Trigger point & dry needling
at Ascend
Dr. Truth’s trigger point needling technique is characterised by exceptional anatomical precision. Having trained directly under David Legg, he has developed a thorough understanding of trigger point referral patterns, muscle anatomy and the neuromuscular mechanisms that drive pain.
Each treatment begins with a thorough assessment of your movement patterns, areas of restriction and the specific muscles involved — ensuring that the needling is targeted where it will have the greatest effect.
Trigger point needling uses dry needle insertion alone — the mechanical action of the needle in the trigger point is sufficient to produce the release.
For conditions requiring deeper neuromuscular reset and muscle activation, Dr. Truth also offers motor point needling with electrostimulation — a more advanced technique that combines needling with gentle electrical current. Learn more about motor point needling →
