What is motor point
needling?
Motor point needling targets the motor point of a muscle — the precise location where the motor nerve enters the muscle belly and where the muscle is most electrically excitable. By needling directly at this point and applying electrostimulation through the needle, Dr. Truth Robinson can communicate directly with the nervous system to reset dysfunctional muscle tissue.
This is a fundamentally different — and more advanced — approach to muscle treatment than standard dry needling or trigger point therapy. Rather than simply releasing a knot mechanically, motor point needling with electrostimulation re-educates the entire neuromuscular pathway, producing deeper and more lasting clinical results.
Dr. Truth trained in motor point needling under Dr. Richard Hazel — one of Australia’s foremost specialists in this technique — developing a level of clinical precision that makes this one of the most powerful tools available at Ascend Acupuncture.
Trigger point vs motor point
Understanding the difference — and why electrostimulation at the motor point takes results to another level.
Trigger Point Needling
A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot within muscle tissue — a tight, knotted area that causes local and referred pain. Dry needling a trigger point causes the muscle to twitch and release, breaking the mechanical pain cycle.
This is an effective technique for acute muscle knots and referred pain — and Dr. Truth uses it regularly as part of comprehensive treatment.
Best for: acute pain, muscle knots, referred pain patterns
Motor Point + Electrostimulation
The motor point is where the motor nerve enters the muscle — its most electrically excitable point. Needling here and applying electrical current through the needle sends a signal directly through the nervous system, forcing the muscle to contract and reset at a neurological level.
This re-educates the entire neuromuscular pathway — not just releasing a knot, but restoring normal muscle function from the nerve down. The results are deeper, faster and significantly longer-lasting.
Best for: chronic pain, post-injury inhibition, athletic performance, neuromuscular dysfunction
What motor point needling treats
Particularly effective for chronic, complex or treatment-resistant musculoskeletal conditions.
Neck & Shoulder Pain
Motor point needling resets the inhibited and overactive muscles driving chronic neck and shoulder dysfunction — delivering results that outlast massage, physio and standard dry needling.
→ Learn moreBack Pain & Sciatica
Chronic lower back pain often involves neurologically inhibited deep stabilisers and overactive superficial muscles — motor point electrostimulation resets this dysfunctional pattern directly.
→ Learn moreSports Injury & Recovery
Athletes use motor point needling to accelerate recovery, restore inhibited muscles after injury and optimise neuromuscular function for peak performance — faster than any other needling technique.
→ Learn moreKnee & Joint Pain
Joint pain is frequently driven by neuromuscular imbalance around the joint — motor point needling restores correct muscle activation patterns, reducing load on the joint and eliminating pain at its source.
→ Learn moreTMJ & Jaw Pain
Motor point needling of the masseter and temporalis muscles with electrostimulation produces rapid, profound relief for TMJ dysfunction, jaw clenching and chronic facial pain.
→ Learn moreMuscle & Joint Pain
Many people assume their pain is a joint problem — but in most cases the joint itself is fine and the real issue is neuromuscular dysfunction in the surrounding muscles. Motor point electrostimulation resets these muscles directly, restoring proper joint mechanics and eliminating pain at its true source.

Motor point needling
at Ascend
Motor point needling with electrostimulation is one of the most technically demanding — and most rewarding — techniques in musculoskeletal medicine. It requires an exceptional knowledge of muscle anatomy, motor nerve locations and neuromuscular physiology to locate each motor point precisely and apply the correct parameters of electrical stimulation.
Having trained directly under Dr. Richard Hazel, Dr. Truth brings a level of precision and clinical depth to this technique that produces results patients often describe as transformative — particularly for chronic conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments.
Each session begins with a full movement assessment to identify which muscles are inhibited, overactive or neurologically dysfunctional — then targets them precisely with motor point needling and electrostimulation.
Motor point needling is often combined with trigger point needling and 60W High Intensity Laser Therapy in the same session for a comprehensive musculoskeletal treatment. Learn about trigger point needling →
