Understanding TMJ and jaw pain

TMJ and jaw pain is very common and is not always caused by teeth grinding or clenching. Quite often the pain comes from muscles that have become chronically over-tightened (especially the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles). These tight muscles can create strong pain referral patterns into the jaw, face, temples and even the ears, and can restrict normal jaw movement.

Jaw pain can also be linked to neck and shoulder tension, stress, or previous injury. In some cases, the muscles become so contracted that normal function is impaired, leading to clicking, locking or persistent discomfort.

Our approach to TMJ & jaw pain

Trigger Point & Dry Needling

Trigger points in the jaw muscles are a frequent source of TMJ pain and referred facial discomfort. Dry needling has shown to be effective at releasing these deep, contracted points that massage often cannot reach adequately, helping to restore normal jaw movement and reduce pain.

Motor Point Needling with Electrostimulation

When jaw muscles have become inhibited or chronically over-tightened, motor point needling combined with gentle electrostimulation may be highly beneficial for resetting muscle function and relieving the tension that keeps the pain cycle active.

Specialized Care

Bell’s Palsy Recovery

Acupuncture, high-intensity laser therapy, and moxibustion have an excellent track record in assisting with Bell’s Palsy recovery. These therapies work synergistically to release contracted or paralysed facial muscles, improve local circulation, and help to enliven facial movement and function once again.

Support for Facial Nerve Health

Our approach focuses on nerve stimulation and muscle rehabilitation to help restore symmetry and vitality to the face.

What to expect

Many patients notice reduced jaw tension, less clicking or pain, and improved ability to open the mouth within the first few sessions. The number of treatments needed depends on how long the issue has been present and individual factors. Dr. Truth will provide a personalised assessment and realistic expectations during your initial consultation.
