Understanding headaches and migraines

Many chronic headaches and migraines are not just “in the head” — they are often driven by tight muscles in the neck, shoulders and jaw. These tight muscles create strong pain referral patterns that can spread across the forehead, temples, behind the eyes and even into the sinuses, closely mimicking other types of headaches.

Massage can make the area feel better temporarily because it relaxes the surface muscles, but the relief often fades by the next day. This is because massage rarely reaches the deeper trigger points and neuromuscular dysfunction that are actually generating the referred pain.

Our approach to headaches & migraines

Trigger Point & Dry Needling

Trigger points in the suboccipital, upper trapezius, sternocleidomastoid and temporalis muscles are a very common source of referred head pain. Dry needling has shown to be effective because it can reach deep into these tight spots and release them directly — something massage often cannot achieve. Patients frequently report rapid relief once these deep points are deactivated.

Motor Point Needling with Electrostimulation

When neck and shoulder muscles have become inhibited or overworked for long periods, they stop functioning properly. Motor point needling with gentle electrostimulation may be highly beneficial for resetting these muscles back to normal function, reducing the compensatory tension that feeds into headache patterns.

60W High Intensity Laser Therapy

When inflammation or nerve irritation around the upper neck is contributing to headaches, our 60W Class IV laser can penetrate to depths that support tissue repair and reduce irritation in areas that are difficult to reach with manual techniques alone.

What to expect

Many patients notice a reduction in headache frequency and intensity within the first few sessions, particularly when muscular referral patterns are a major factor. The total number of treatments needed varies depending on how long the headaches have been present. Dr. Truth will provide a personalised assessment and realistic expectations during your initial consultation.
